about

A song inspired by Zora Neale Hurston's magnificent book "Their Eyes Were Watching God." This was my contribution to Wild Bob's Musical Book Club, a book club that reads a book a month then writes songs inspired by the book. This was my first contribution to the gathering. I am now a lifelong fan. It makes me read more, and it inspires me to write more music. Some songs have been years in the making, while some have been a month or even a day in the making.

lyrics

My head is old
and tilted to the grave
when I'm gone
who will my memory save?
When I was young my hand was forced against me
to a man I did not love
though to the law we were married
I he did not have
Still nothing can keep the heart from wishing
even in my bondage did I fly
then a man who walked in strength and power
spoke in song and rhyme
"Will you follow me where I may go, child
yes, I will follow you where you will go
life is short and tailored for the living
lead and I will go

----

Words soft and warm
he no longer shared
my heart grew cold
and stumbled t'ward the grave
What kind of man so drunk on power
crack the whip on everything he rule?
force a rose to cover up her flower
turn a queen to a mule
One of these days my darling
soon and it won't be long
you're gonna wake up a'callin'
and I'll be gone
Then death came so slow and uninvited
left him to lord no more
and left me with longing unrequited
wealthy yet poor

-----

One of these days my darling
soon and it won't be long
you'll wake up reaching for your sadness
and find it gone
Song after song
a young man to me gave
my heart grew warm
and flowered from the grave
don't you know that love is like an ocean
of satin blue, so vast and free
he was the bee to my blossom
I the pear to his tree
Then one day a storm came a'crashing
river near swallowed us whole
he was consumed by a madness
his heart I could not hold
This madness it had a hungry power
for my life it took an aim
I had no choice but to defend it
the judge gave me no blame
Dear God I loved him with a passion
loved him till death did us part
now I in my sorrow and confusion
over must start

Yes my head is old
and tilted to the grave
when I'm gone
love alone will save
love alone will save
love alone will ...
